Learning a new instrument or art medium can be extremely challenging and costly.

For parents seeking to nurture their children’s artistic abilities and make informed

choices about extracurricular opportunities, understanding the value of secondary

education is essential, as it is also a significant investment. These ten-week

exploration sessions are designed to deepen students’ understanding of music

and art while allowing parents to observe which activities most effectively engage

their children. In this way, students learn creative techniques and develop skills

that help parents confidently select after-school programming to support their

children’s independence and ongoing growth.

Analog Introductions

This 10-week series offers a structured introduction to music and art, covering

core concepts in each session geared towards understanding analog art world.

While students begin to gain a broad overview of creative processes through

hands-on activities, the program aims to deepen their understanding of both

similar different artistic approaches from medium to medium. Each session

focuses on beginner skills, vocabulary, and concepts, that will be reinforced

through each and every lesson. As music weeks build upon a basic understanding

theory, technique, and the creative process, art weeks, through practical projects,

will help provide a deeper understanding of language and application.

Week 1 - Piano/Keys

beginning to understand core musical concepts through familiar melodies.

Week 2 - Illustration

In this lesson, students will concentrate on the fundamental concepts of

illustration and storytelling. Through guided practice, they will experiment with

various drawing techniques and materials that help communicate narrative

through artistic choice. The objective is to understand the capabilities of visually

communicating ideas and narratives.

Week 3 - Ukulele/Guitar

In this session, students will continue to look at the fundamentals of music theory,

this time with a ukulele or guitar in their hands. They will engage in concepts of

melody and basic chord shapes, and strumming patterns, as well as applying

these concepts by playing simple melodies selected from songs they love. The

objective is to develop listening skills and a sense of musical structure andtechnique through music they enjoy.

envelopes. The objective is for students to deepen their understanding of time,

musical structure, and aesthetics.

Week 8 - Oil, Pastels, or Charcoal

In this lesson, students will explore the fundamental techniques of working with oil

paints, pastels, or charcoal. They will engage in guided exercises to understand

blending, layering, and shading, while experimenting with different styles and

visual effects inherent to each medium. The objective is for students to gain

practical experience that helps provide problem-solving situations, developing

their observational and expressive skills by creating original artworks.

Week 9 - Songwriting

In this session, students will initiate the songwriting process by selecting music

that inspires them and analyzing its structure, melody, and lyrics. Drawing on

musical concepts, techniques, and creative skills developed in earlier lessons,

students will begin to compose and organize song elements such as verses,

choruses, and bridges. The objective is for students to apply their accumulated

knowledge to initiate the create process with a composition that reflect their

personal tastes.

Week 10 - Mixed Media

The final lesson of this series is designed as a “final project” workshop as students

conceptualize a project they want to work develop on their own. By independently

making choices about ideas, compositions, and materials, students not only

synthesize their learning but also demonstrate the artistic direction they may wish

to pursue in their secondary education.

Digital Introductions

This 10-week series also provides a structured introduction to foundational

concepts in music and art, but with each session more focused on leading to

digital experiences and approaches. The series is designed to give students a

broad overview of creative processes, while allowing them to build essential skills

through hands-on activities and guided instruction. The primary objectives are to

foster a deeper appreciation of various artistic mediums, strengthen technical

proficiency, and encourage creative expression. Throughout the program,

students will develop an understanding of their abilities and unearth a clearer

sense of their individual interests. Music weeks cover basic theory, technical skills,

and creative application on piano, guitar, drums, and analog synthesizer. Art weeks

feature hands-on projects in illustration, painting, sculpture, mixed media, and

digital media, allowing students to build skills and understanding through guided

practice.

Week 1 - Piano/Keys

In this session, students will be introduced to basic piano theory through the

exploration of inspiring music selections drawn from a variety of genres that

resonate with their interests. The lesson will cover essential elements such as

pitch, rhythm, melody, and note reading, with students engaging in guided

exercises to identify and play simple melodies on the keyboard. By analyzing

selected pieces, students will learn to recognize common musical structures and

patterns, laying the groundwork for further study in both performance and

composition. The objective is for students to develop a foundational understanding

of piano theory while building confidence in interpreting and performing music that

motivates them.

Week 2 - Illustration
